What Is Fanfiction?

Fanfiction is what happens when someone in the audience goes Yes, AND? and never gets an answer. So, they write it on their own.

There’s no profit to be found as a fan writer, in contrast to a fan artist who makes art in appreciation of a work, but not opposed in goals. It is much like making AMVs- Oh, I’m sorry, what are the new ones called… It’s the short little edits that appear on that one app, no wait, all social media conglomerates have short form video content to push now… Ack, well, it’s just that general fan culture is strictly a Hobby rather than a cash grab.

Most people like not being sued after all. There’s a certain deceased author whose name rhymes with Han Nice that has made this fear all too real for American fan writers. At times it can feel like a thankless job producing content to be consumed, but that’s not what fanfiction is.
